Why is there a five month waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?
Great question! It is because Congress, the President and the House of Representatives all got together and decided that waiting five months was the right number for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) SARCASM. All kidding aside, in 1973 the waiting period was six months, not five. A rule that appears to be arbitrary and silly today actually had an important purpose 47 years ago.
The reason why we have a five month waiting period is back in the 1970's the Social Security Administration needed that time to communicate with the IRS to make sure that the person applying was not mistaken or worse trying to commit fraud to get SSDI benefits. Today with the rapid advancements in technology from over 40 years ago information can be accessed, interpreted and securely presented to the SSA from the IRS with a push of a button.
Therefore, the only reason why we still have it is because it saves the government a ton of money every year. Biden has proposed to eliminate the five month waiting period and he is right this provision needs to be eliminated and those who meet the criteria benefits should start immediately receiving benefits from the onset date.
Is this ever Going to Happen?
Well we are dealing the government and so we will not know for sure until it does happen but I think it gets done by the end of 2021 and I am 85% confident and if not it will get done by the end of Biden's first four years and I am sitting on 95% on it. It just makes zero sense to keep an arbitrary waiting period now, that served a purpose 48 years ago. Technology helps us advance and we need to advance with technology and here is a perfect example of a change that everyone in our Government should be behind.
